Ekiti deputy gov, Adelabu, takes oath of office PDF Print E-mail

The new Deputy Governor of Ekiti, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, yesterday took oath of office amid ovations at a well-attended swearing-in ceremony at the Government House, Ado-Ekiti.

The state Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, administered the oath of office and the oath allegiance on Adelabu, a 63-year-old professor of education, about noon.

At the event which followed the Tuesday ratification of her nomination by the state House of Assembly, Governor Kayode Fayemi described Adelabu as a round peg in a round hole.

Fayemi, who said Adelabu’s appointment was received with “overwhelming approval,” said “leadership has been genetically implanted in her by virtue of her noble birth…”

The governor had on May 3, forwarded Adelabu’s name to the state House of Assembly for consideration as deputy governor to replace the late Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka.

The new deputy governor, an Ado-Ekiti princess, was born to Prince and Mrs. Samuel Adepoju Adejugbe.

While charging her on commitment and service to the people, the governor, who thanked the people for their “show of love and solidarity,” said clear conscience would always put her in good stead in the challenges of the office.

He said: “This woman of substance steps into the large shoes left behind by her predecessor.”
The governor added that the late Olayinka did not ask for it, “we did not pray for it, but God knows best,” as he thanked the family of the late deputy governor, the Famuagun family of Ado- Ekiti, represented at the swearing-in by Chief Festus Famuagun, the Sasere of Ado-Ekiti.

In her acceptance speech, Adelabu, who said her predecessor worked tirelessly for the development of Ekiti State, assured that “the work she had started, I promise to continue”.

The deputy governor promised total support and cooperation with the governor in view of the confidence reposed in her.

She said: “We will move this state forward. I begin to see a situation where we begin to export personnel very soon. I pledge my loyalty to the country, to the state and the governor.”

Among dignitaries at the event are Fayemi’s wife, Bisi; former Governor Niyi Adebayo; General Alani Akinrinade (rtd); Chief Pius Akinyelure; House of Representatives member, Hon. Bamidele Faparusi; Ekiti State University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Aina; and Provost of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Prof. Francisca Aladejana.

Traditional rulers at the event included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade; the Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida; the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe and the Chairman of Ekiti Obas and the Owa Ooye of Oke- Imesi, Oba Gbadebo Adedeji.
